Ramadan Kareem! For those readers who don’t know, Ramadan is the holy month in which Muslims fast. It’s a month of spiritual cleansing and a spiritual high.

So as expected with the coming of Ramadan, our hopes went up. Dad and I went on for the special Ramadan prayers on the first night, since mom was doing well and Mariam chose to stay at home.  On our way back from the mosque, we were just chatting and he said ” who knows maybe she will just get better, Allah can do anything”, I nodded in agreement.  Hope is a great thing, it is what keeps us going. It is also hardest to find, when you have someone suffering with a disease that is as unpredictable as vascular dementia.

Mom has been doing well for last few days. No tantrums, some confusion and fixations but usually okay. Dad broke down yesterday. He cried for a bit, a release of emotions I guess. Looking back at the kind of life mom lived, her lifestyle and accomplishments, it’s almost unimaginable that she would suffer from a disease that literally kills a person’s intelligence. He never expected in his own words “the last leg of our life to be like this”…
